MTH 39-1. Back to the Sea
Jack and Annie were riding their bikes home from the library.
Just then, a seagull swooped over them and flew into the Frog Creek woods.
It was a sign.
They rode their bikes and ran into the woods.
They arrived at the tallest oak, and Teddy and Kathleen were also there.
Morgan sent Teddy and Kathleen to tell Jack and Annie about the next mission for Merlin.
Merlin still suffered from sorrow.
Kathleen gave the third search book to Jack.
The title was the Deep Sea.
Jack and Annie remembered their past travel.
Jack always carries the Wand of Dianthus.
Teddy and Kathleen gave advice "you remember to keep your wits about you and listen to your hearts."
And Jack said the magic words, "I wish we could go there!"
MTH 39-2. Pirates Again?
The Tree House had landed in a tall tree near the ocean.
The ocean was shrouded in a gray haze.
Their research book said that mountains and volcanoes are hidden deep beneath the surface of the sea.
Annie drove into a wave, and Jack waded into the water.
Annie found a ship in the ocean.
They thought the ship looked like the pirate ship that they had seen past travel.
A rowboat was leaving the ship and headed toward them.
Jack and Annie ran into the Tree House, and he was looking for a Pennsylvania book.
Three men were in the rowboat, and they wore clean shirts, hats, and pants.
A man in the bow tie started poking at clumps of seaweed, and studied them, and wrote down something in his notebook.
They didn't look like the pirates.
Jack and Annie climbed down and could see the name of the ship.
It was HMS Challenger.
Their research book said The HMS Challenger was a scientific exploration ship in the history of the world from 1872 to 1876.
As Annie went and said hello, the three looked at her as if they were staring at a ghost.
MTH 39-3. A Creature Named Henry
Jack, Annie, and the three men introduced each other.
The name of the man in the rowboat was Henry, and the name of the two sailors was Joe and Tommy.
Henry has collected volcanic rocks to solve the riddles of the deep.
Annie started to explain about the ocean, mountain ranges, volcanoes, and mini-subs what she knew.
Jack stopped her.
Henry showed a pencil drawing of the shell in his book to Jack and Annie.
Henry was going to be back on the ship because he already finished his work.
Annie asked him to visit the HMS Challenger.
Joe and Tommy objected to taking them to their ship.
But Jack and Annie wanted to learn more about sea exploration, and Henry allowed them.
The two seamen grudgingly gave Jack and Annie their life preservers.
Henry, Joe, Tommy, Jack, and Annie got on the rowboat.
It started going back to the ship.
MTH 39-4. Off the Ship!
The waves kept bouncing up and down.
Jack was worried about being seasick, and he tried to keep from it.
Joe and Tommy talked about the twenty-foot tiger shark.
Henry said that a crewman had glimpsed something monstrous in the water yesterday.
They reached the HMS Challenger and climbed up to the deck.
Sailors were working, coiling thick ropes and hauling up buckets.
The captain and the professor came up to Jack, Annie, and Henry.
Henry introduced Jack and Annie to the captain and the professor.
Professor Thomson was the scientific director of the Challenger, and he was one of the world's most renowned experts on the ocean. He was studying depth, temperature, creatures in the ocean.
But the captain wanted that Jack and Annie got off the ship immediately.
MTH 39-5. Ooze
Henry was afraid that Jack and Annie had to go back to shore.
Sailors were sweeping up sea animals from the floor of the ocean with large nets.
Thunder rolled in the sky and the captain let them take below to the main deck.
So Jack and Annie could stay on the ship a while longer.
Henry led them to his sea laboratory.
There were many bottles with specimens.
Jack and Annie watched the sea horse through the microscope.
The scientists in the ship measured the specimens and identified sea creatures and then preserved them in bottles of alcohol and label the bottles.
There was also ooze from the bottom of the sea in the bottle.
He also showed his notebook that he drew, shells, plants, and butterflies.
The ship's bell rang, and he led Jack and Annie to the wardroom for lunch.
MTH 39-6. Pea Soup
Jack, Annie, and Henry filed into the wardroom following naval officers and scientists.
The captain told Jack and Annie to go back to shore immediately after the storm.
Henery introduced them to others.
When Jack was served salted meat, pickles, dried biscuits, he felt seasick.
He took a long sip of water, but he spitted it into his cup.
It was unbelievably sour.
People in the ship ate it to prevent scurvy because they couldn't eat fresh vegetables and fruits.
The storm was getting worse, and the ship lurched.
People hurried out of the room and went down the steps to the hold.
Jack and Annie followed them, and Henry went to his lab to secure it.
Jack felt seasick seriously, but he didn't want to throw up on the stairs or in front of others.
So he ran up to the top deck, and Annie followed him.
The rain, wind, and waves were worse than before.
Jack thought it was his mistake.
Jack and Annie tried to return to the stairwell, but he was swept up into the churning sea.
MTH 39-7. Help!
Jack plunged down into the sea, and Annie fell into the water, too.
He tried to approach her, but it was useless.
Their life vasts took off by the waves.
Jack felt something curl around his waist.
It was a giant octopus that he'd ever seen.
Annie was also grabbed by the octopus.
He tried to fight it, but Annie stopped him.
The giant octopus was rescuing them.
Jack tried not to panic, and he felt it holding him above the water.
When he saw the eyes of it, he felt the octopus looked concerned.
His fear vanished, and they could laugh.
And the HMS challenger headed toward them.
MTH 39-8. Monster of the Deep
Jack and Annie found the HMS Challenger and swam to the ship.
They climbed up the ladder and reached the top.
The professor and Henry asked how did they end up in the water.
Annie explained the octopus saved them.
On the other side of the ship, sailors tried to catch the octopus.
The octopus was tangled in a net.
Jack and Annie asked them to let it go eagerly.
But Sailors and captain tried to hurt it, and the professor insisted on catching it alive.
Annie sobbed, and Jack remembered, and he got to know exactly what to do.
MTH 39-9. Think! Think!
Jack remembered their wand of Dianthus in his pack.
He reminded he left it in Henry's lab.
He and Annie went to Henry's lab but it locked.
They found Henry and asked him to open the door of his lab.
Henry asked them what happened, but they answered to explain later.
Henry unlocked the door of his lab, and there was his pack on the table.
Jack thought about the curiosity and shyness of the giant octopus.
And he said the five magic words.
"Make-them-hear-the-truth!"
Henry didn't know what was going on.
Annie said, "Let's go tell the truth."
MTH 39-10. The Heart of the Ocean
Jack and Annie climbed back up to the top deck, and Henry followed them.
The sailors had gathered weapons to the giant octopus.
Jack and Annie stopped them, but it was useless.
Annie thought the magic didn't work.
Just then, the giant octopus raised out of the water and said slowly.
"Let- Me- Go- Home-. IM- No- Monster-."
It sounded unbearably sad.
The crews murmured, and the captain said that free him.
Jack, Annie, Joe, Tommy, and Henry climbed down the ladder and stepped a boat.
Henry cut the thick rope strands and let the giant octopus go.
The octopus waved his tentacles and then slipped under the surface of the water and vanished.
MTH 39-11. Good-bye, Mates
All people on the ship cheered and the captain ordered starting the ship.
Henry took Jack and Annie to the shore.
Tommy and Joe rowed the rowboat.
When they arrived at the shore, Henry gave Jack and Annie his nautilus shell.
Henry said that he got to know his fears could best be conquered through compassion.
His nautilus shell made Henry happy.
Jack thought that the secret of happiness was having compassion for all living creatures.
They said goodbye to each other and Henry, Joe, Tommy left and headed to the HMS challenger.
Jack and Annie returned to the Frog Creek woods.
They missed their warm, dry house, parents, and fresh food.
They rode their bikes and headed to their house.
